Water and Dreams
Project Room
17 January – 9 February 2025
Monika Masser works with sculpture and drawing in different materials and techniques. She sees her sculptures as a kind of three-dimensional drawings that need to relate to space, the body and the gaze. Her work often delves into intricate, labyrinthine, and organic forms. Viewers may discover shifts in scale within her sculptures, where the small can appear monumentally large if seen from a different perspective.
“Currently, I am in an artistic process where I am searching for an outcome, though I do not yet know what it will be. I have been inspired by Gaston Bachelard, particularly his essay ‘Water and Dreams.’ It is ironic that the transparency and reflective qualities of water contrast with the materiality of sculptures, which manifest as a wordless language in a static, clearly defined form. These forms exist solely because I, as an artist, have conjured them. They have been drawn from the depths of the subconscious, as if pulled from the ocean’s depths.
